For International Performers

ONSCREEN-AGENCY.COM's

ADVICE

'Always tell your agent the dates and times you will not be available'

i.Each year The Spotlight publishes 'CONTACTS' (£11.50)

to help you find the best services at the lowest price:

Visit www.spotlight.com/shop/contacts  or Call:+44(0)20 7440 5032

ii.Research a role, production and casting director through www.google.co.uk or www.imdb.com

iii.If you are performing in the U.K. ask BECTU or British Equity www.equity.org.uk to check every production contract and written agreement.

If you are not a member of British Equity, ask them how to become a member as soon as possible, register your professional screen name and ask Equity for the latest Cinema Films Agreement, Televison Production Agreement and all other guidelines and agreements regarding your payment rates.

iv.If you are filming in the U.S. ask the Screen Actor's Guild (SAG) to double check all contracts.

v.Mail your items recorded delivery so the post office can track them, also enclose a stamped self-addressed envelope if you want your items sent back.

vi.A steady job will pay expenses until you begin winning auditions regularly, visit www.monster.co.uk , www.londonjobs.co.uk or read the jobs section of

The Stage newspaper.

Inexpensive accomodation may be found through www.gumtree.com

vii.When sending your CV, 8x10 headshots and showreel repros, continually test for constructive responses from a Few casting directors then use those responses to improve repros sent to Many casting directors then use those responses to improve repros sent to ALL casting directors.

viii. YOUR AUDITION TAPE or SHOWREEL:

IMPORTANT: Your audition tape or showreel MUST impress upon the viewers that you belong onscreen so send your best work, preferably edited onto DVD so you can be seen on a TV or computer monitor immediately.

If you're unable to find a professional or unable to set up a camcorder yourself then ask friends or family members with relevant experience or someone who owes you a favour to record your audition - BE RESOURCEFUL in getting your monologue or scene onto VHS or DVD which mass markets your performance skills. Acting a good role in a student filmed production (that pays travel and food expenses at least) is the quickest way to build your showreel which displays your talents. Send copies as originals may be damaged in post.

Shop in Spotlight's CONTACT book for showreel editors

PHILOSOPHY:

If .......................................by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings

And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -

Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son.

"A weak something is greater than a strong nothing

but we must constantly improve on that something"
